§ Mr. Wigleyasked the Prime Minister if she will seek the agreement of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland to the holding of a joint referendum amongst all the citizens of Ireland, both the Republic and the six counties, on the question of the reunification of Ireland, and that both Governments would abide by the majority decision of all the Irish people.
§ The Prime MinisterNo. The future constitutional status of Northern Ireland is a matter for Her Majesty's Government, Parliament at Westminster and the people of Northern Ireland. I value the unique relationship between the peoples of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, but I do not believe a joint referendum would assist in the development of that relationship.
