Mr. Watson

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) what is the extent of the financial commitment to date in respect of the Heysham B nuclear power station;

(2) how much money has been spent to date upon preliminary works for the Heysham B nuclear power station;

(3) what is the estimated cost of the graphite moderator for the Heysham B nuclear power station.

I am advised by the CEGB that:

  1. (i) its financial commitment to date in respact of Heysham II is £108 million;
  2. (ii) the amount spent to date on preliminary works is £22½ million;
  3. (iii) in order not to prejudice its commercial position prior to the award of contracts, it is not the board's practice to publish its estimate for the cost of specific plant components such as the graphite moderator.
