§ Mr. Frank Allaunasked the Minister for the Civil Service what steps are taken to ensure that all officials use plain 173W English in forms, leaflets and letters to the public; if he will initiate campaigns throughout the Civil Service, using posters, memoranda and training sessions, to promote the use of plain English; and if he will ensure that libraries carry adequate supplies of "The Complete Plain Words" by Sir Ernest Gowers and "Plain English" by the Plain English Campaign.
§ Mr. ChannonSuccessive Governments have encouraged the use of plain English in the Civil Service. Continuing efforts are being made by the present Government to simplify leaflets, and to encourage the use of plain English on training courses and in every other appropriate way.
