HL Deb 08 July 1980 vol 411 cc1162-4WA
Lord MOTTISTONE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

The approximate number of salvage operations carried out by the Royal Navy, for which salvage awards were made, between January 1950 and December 1979, and to ask for an indication of the benefits, in training terms, to the captains and ship's companies of HM Ships involved.

The MINISTER of STATE, MINISTRY of DEFENCE (Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal)

Over 350. It is difficult to evaluate the benefits in training which are considered substantial. They will depend on the nature and circumstances of the particular operation; the experience and skills of the personnel; and the equipment required, for example, in lifesaving, firefighting and towage. They are, of course, additional and coincidental to the experience and training gained in the course of HM Ships' normal operational activities.

House adjourned at twenty-seven minutes past ten o'clock.
