§ Mr. Kilroy-Silkasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many new prison places are to be started in 1980–81, 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84 and 1984–85 in remand centres, detention centres, young offender establishments and prisons in security categories A, B, C and D; where they are to be; if he will give separate figures for males and females; and what is the approximate cost per place in each category.
§ Mr. BrittanThe information which the hon. Member requests in the first two parts of the question is published in appendix No. 2 of the report on the work of the prison department 1978, Cmnd. 7619. These are not all, however, additional places, as many will replace places lost for reasons such as decay, damage or conversion for other prison use. Information relating to the position at 1 January 1980 has been prepared and will appear20W in the 1979 report which will be published shortly. We have no present plans to start any places for females in the period 1980–85.
The approximate cost per inmate place at first quarter 1980 prices is as follows:—
