§ Mr. Strangasked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many wardens he employs at Holyrood Palace; and whether he is implementing changes in their conditions of employment;
(2) what discussions have taken place with the Civil Service Union regarding the conditions of employment of wardens at Holyrood Palace; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. YoungerI employ 14 wardens to provide on a repayment basis a warding service for the Lord Chamberlain who is responsible for the presentation of the Palace. He proposes to establish his own warding force and, with my agreement, has offered employment to the present wardens. Discussions with the Civil Service Union regarding the conditions offered are a matter for the Lord Chamberlain. I have, however, maintained the closest contacts with both union and Royal Household and have offered to use my good offices in any way that might help.
