§ Lord EVANS of CLAUGHTONasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they will recommend to the Royal Mint that the size, weight and shape of either the 10p or the 50p piece be altered in view of the fact that, as is well known to the police throughout the country, it is extremely easy to temper the lop coin so that it can counterfeit a 50p coin for the purpose of coin-operated machines.

§ Lord COCKFIELDWhile the United Kingdom coinage is kept under review, the Government have no plans to introduce changes at this time. Any change imposes considerable costs on both public and private sector, not the least on those employing coin-operated machines.
