HC Deb 30 January 1980 vol 977 c668W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will estimate the approximate percentage by value of manufactured goods consumed in the United Kingdom that were imported in the years 1970 and 1979, respectively, together with any convenient breakdown, into major categories.

Mr. Parkinson

Information for 1970 and for the 12-month period ended June 1979, the latest available, is as follows:

since the country of origin of all goods imported into the United Kingdom must be shown separately on the Customs entry. Where quota'd goods are in free circulation it is open to a member State to seek Commission agreement under article 115 of the Treaty of Rome to deny them entry. The United Kingdom seeks such agreement as necessary, and has done so successfully some 20 times since May 1979.
