HC Deb 28 January 1980 vol 977 c540W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many second homes there are in England, Wales and Scotland, respectively.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The available estimates are:

No. of second dwellings:
March 1978
England 120,000
Scotland & Wales 25,000
Source: Audits of Great Britain Ltd.

The estimates are based on a sample of households and are therefore subject to large sampling error. The samples in Scotland and Wales are too small to provide reliable estimates for the separate countries.
