Following its last meeting, the Commonwealth Secretary-General wrote to my right hon. and noble Friend to convey the committee's views on the subject of the South African presence at Beit bridge. An appropriate reply has been sent. As the Lord Privy Seal said in reply to a parliamentary question on 16 January—[Vol. 976, c. 1611–15]—the Governor has decided that a small contingent of South African forces is required to guard the Beit bridge. The Governor is keeping this matter under review.
