HC Deb 22 January 1980 vol 977 c133W
Mr. Sheerman

asked the Minister of Transport if he will make a statement on the Government's intentions regarding the safety of road users in the light of the excessive damage caused to roads by the increasing numbers of heavy vehicles and lack of spending or maintenance.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Local authorities are spending over £550 million a year on road maintenance—on local roads and as agent authorities on roads for which my right hon. Friend is responsible. Urgent motorway repairs are receiving prority attention because of the effects or increased volumes of heavy vehicles.

Road safety continues to be a major consideration in determining priorities.
