§ 33. Mr. Grieveasked the Secretary of State for Employment if, in view of the expenditure incurred by the Manpower Services Commission in organising lectures on such matters as drug addiction, alcoholism, venereal disease and choosing a partner for marriage, he will review the work of the commission with a view to confining its resources and expenditure more closely to its responsibilities in employment and training.
§ Mr. Jim LesterI am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that it encourages provision of further education for young people in work experience schemes under its youth opportunities programme. Where appropriate, such education includes advice on how to overcome personal or social problems, because this is relevant to the programme's main purpose of helping young people to settle into working life. But I am assured by the MSC that education covering the matters to which my hon. and learned Friend refers forms a very minor part of educational provision under the programme and participation is voluntary.
