HL Deb 15 January 1980 vol 404 c89WA
Lord AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether British Embassies in Latin America will continue to accept applications from persons in detention or under threat of prosecution or arrest in their own countries; and if so, what will be the criteria used by the Home Office in deciding whether to grant such applications.

Lord BELSTEAD

Yes. Applications for asylum from such people in Latin America will be considered under the same criteria as are applied to applications for asylum from elsewhere; that a genuine need for resettlement exists, that the United Kingdom appears, in any particular case, to be the most appropriate country of resettlement, and that the applicant is personally acceptable. British posts overseas, including those in Latin America, will accordingly forward applications for consideration which appear to fulfil these criteria.
