HC Deb 14 January 1980 vol 976 c684W
Mr. Robert Atkins

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied with the freedom with which Third world countries can market their packeted teas in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Wiggin

Yes. There are no restrictions in the United Kingdom on either the importation or marketing of tea which has been packeted in producing countries.

Mr. Robert Atkins

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the Government's policy on proposals for an international tea agreement.

Mr. Wiggin

In accordance with its view that tea is a suitable commodity for an international commodity agreement, the Government are giving careful consideration to proposals put forward by producer countries at the UNCTAD preparatory meeting last month. Further meetings under UNCTAD auspices will be held later this year to discuss possible arrangements for an agreement.
