HC Deb 14 January 1980 vol 976 cc606-7W
Mr. Kaufman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the current cost of rent rebates; and by how much he expects it to increase for the next financial year if local authorities act on his rate support grant settlement guideline of an average rent increase of £1.50 a week.

Mr. Stanley

The total of rent rebates paid by local authorities in England in the current financial year 1979–80 is provisionally estimated to be £378 million—outturn prices. It is for authorities themselves to determine their own rent levels, but if all local authorities were to increase their rents by £1.50 per week on average the total in 1980–81 on the same price basis is projected to be £419 million.
