HC Deb 14 January 1980 vol 976 cc575-6W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will consider refits of type 21 and 22 frigates, type 42 destroyers or Swiftsure, Valiant, Trafalgar class nuclear submarines in Scotland in view of the withdrawal from Rosyth of refits of conventional submarines.

Mr. Speed

The work force at Her Majesty's dockyard Rosyth is at present fully occupied on the SSBN refit programme and on various types of surface vessel. There are, therefore, no plans at present to refit types 21 and 22 frigates, type 42 destroyers, or Fleet submarines of the Swiftsure, Valiant and Trafalgar classes there. The surface ship and submarine refitting programmes for Rosyth and the other Royal dockyards are, however, kept under constant review to ensure that all the resources available are used to the fullest possible extent.
