§ Mr. Silvesterasked the Lord Privy Seal what process is required if Her Majesty's Government decide to renew the acceptance by the United Kingdom of the compulsory jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights in 1981; and whether such a decision requires the approval of Parliament.
§ Sir Ian GilmourAt the appropriate time the decision of Her Majesty's Government will be communicated to Parliament. Subsequently, our permanent representative to the Council of Europe will be asked to convey the decision to the Secretary-General of that organisation.
The prior approval of Parliament is not required.
