HC Deb 29 February 1980 vol 979 c758W
Mr. Higgins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has had about a national shortage of change; whether such a shortage exists; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Rees

Over the last nine months unprecedented demand has led to a shortage of most coin, but, apart from representations from the banks, very few complaints have been received by the Royal Mint.

To meet the shortage, the Mint increased production and recent indications are that the situation is improving.
