asked Her Majesty's Government:

1. How many places were there on 1st January, 1980 in (a) bail hostels and (b) probation hostels available to people on bail, or on any other recent convenient date; and

2. How many bail information schemes similar to the one at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court have been established since Home Office Circular number 155/75 was issued.

Lord BELSTEAD

1. (a) On 1st January, 1980 there were 250 places in bail hostels and combined probation/bail hostels available to people on bail and (b) of the other 68 probation hostels now open the majority make one or two places available to people on bail if places are vacant.

2. I regret that this information is not available on a national basis. The Government are aware of 37 schemes that were established, but a number are no longer running.
