asked the Secretary of State fo Social Services how many privately-owned old people's homes were licensed by local authorities during 1979; and how many such homes are known at present to be in existence within England and Wales.

In 1978 there were some 2,000 privately-owned registered old people's homes in England and Wales. I regret that similar information for 1979 is not readily available, nor is the number of homes newly registered in any particular year.
