HC Deb 26 February 1980 vol 979 c545W
Dr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list in the Official Report any legislation pertaining to refundable deposits on containers of beers and soft drinks in each of the EEC countries and in Canada and Australia.

Mr. Fox

There is no legislation pertaining to refundable deposits on beverage containers in any of the EEC countries, although in Denmark certain types of containers are banned. The Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands have voluntary agreements with industry on the limitation of the type of container. In Canada most provinces impose mandatory deposits on all beverage containers; in Australia a similar system is in force only in the state of South Australia. Details of the actual legislation are not readily available.
