HC Deb 22 February 1980 vol 979 c369W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Minister of Transport what is the proportion per thousand of road fund licences issued in each of the eight counties of Wales; and what is the proportion per thousand for England as a whole.

Mr. Fowler

Information is not collected in this form. Vehicle excise licences in Great Britain are issued from 82 local offices of the Department of Transport and from approximately 2,000 post offices. These offices do not have defined geographic responsibilities. "Transport Statistics in Great Britain 1968–1978", a copy of which is in the Library, shows the following information for licensed private cars and private vans kept in the areas in question in 1978:

Areas and Numbers of Private Cars and Private Vans per 1,000 population
Clwyd 270
Dyfed 295
Gwent 258
Gwynedd 292
Mid-Glamorgan 197
Powys 302
South Glamorgan 254
West Glamorgan 245
England 266

The corresponding figure for Great Britain is 259. Owing to a printer's error this was published as 309.
