Mr. Ronald W. Brownasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what the financial figure agreed with the Treasury is for funding the whole Barts, London and Queen Mary College project, planned as one scheme including pre-clinical, clinical and health authority areas under the Medical Sub-Head (A2 Head 4); and how many students will be enrolled each year from 1980–81 to 1985–86.

The 1968 report of the Royal Commission on Medical Education—the Todd report—recommended a joint pre-clinical school for Barts and London at Queen Mary College. London University will be considering this proposal in the light of the report of the University of London working party on medical and dental teaching resources which is to be published later this month. If the proposal is accepted and a student intake figure for the joint school agreed, it will then be for the University Grants Committee and the university to agree a cost for building the pre-clinical school at Queen Mary College. This would be built in association with clinical teaching accommodation at the London hospital, Mile End, and accommodation for postgraduate education provided by the area health authority (teaching). When the cost of the whole project has been established, it will be referred to my Department for consideration.
