HC Deb 22 February 1980 vol 979 cc364-5W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many persons were rehoused under the Housing (Homeless Persons) Act 1977 in the last year for which figures are available, expressed both numerically and as a percentage of all who were rehoused in that year.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

Local housing authorities in England reported that they had accepted a responsibility to secure accommodation—not necessarily council accommodation—under the Housing (Homeless Persons) Act 1977 for about 54,000 households between 1 July 1978 and 30 June 1979.

In the financial year 1978–79 about 40,000 dwellings in England from local authorities' housing revenue account stock were let to homeless households. This is equivalent to about 13 per cent. of all lettings to new tenants during this period. Statistics in terms of persons rather than households are not available in the form requested.
