asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will list the successful prosecutions brought in the United Kingdom under the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act 1976 involving the smuggling of rare flora and fauna listed in the Schedules to that Act.

Lord COCK FIELD

Evasion of the import and export restrictions imposed by the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act 1976 is liable to proceedings under the Customs and Excise legislation. Particulars of such prosecutions are as follows:

1977 1 prosecution £150 fine.
1979 1 prosecution £220 fine.
1980 1 prosecution to date 6 months' and 3 months' imprisonment (concurrent) and £100 fine.

Whether they will list the successful prosecutions brought in (a) the United States of America and (b) Switzerland under their legislation ratifying the Washington Convention in Endangered Species 1972.
