HC Deb 20 February 1980 vol 979 c243W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the total amount of income tax paid by persons earning (a) under £5,000 (b) under £10,000, (c) under £15,000 and (d) over £15,000; and if he will show this in percentage terms.

Mr. Peter Rees

Without the expenditure of undue time and resources the information is only obtainable by ranges of total income. The following estimates relate to 1978–79, which is the latest year for which provisional information is available.

1978–79
Range of total income Estimated income tax £ million Estimated percentage of total Per cent.
Under £5,000 6,300 31
Under £10,000 15,600 76
Under £15,000 17,700 87
Over £15,000 2,700 13
Total 20,400 100

The estimates quoted refer to the accrual of income tax as opposed to the actual receipts of tax.

Incomes of a married couple have been added together.
