§ Mr. WhitelawThere is no separate category of intensive probation supervision. The probation officer gives as much time to each person supervised as he deems necessary. Information published in "Probation and After-Care Statistics England and Wales"—table 49 of the 1978 issue—shows that in the financial year 1977–78—the latest year for which figures are available—the average cost of probation supervision was about £270 per person per year.
