§ Mr. Donald Stewartasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what effect the recent pay increase has had on recruitment to the police in Scotland.
§ Mr. YoungerWhile it is not possible to identify precisely the effects of any particular pay increase on recruitment, it is noteworthy that in 1979 the number of recruits to police forces in Scotland was 1,528, giving a net increase in strength of 815. At 31 December 1979 total strength was 13,214, only 60 short of authorised establishment. All these figures are the best ever recorded.
