HC Deb 06 February 1980 vol 978 c271W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the total amount of money which Harland and Wolff has received from public funds over the last five years.

Mr. Giles Shaw

In common with other merchant shipbuilding yards in the United Kingdom it has been necessary to support Harland and Wolff from public funds. Between 1 January 1975 and 31 December 1979 Harland and Wolff received assistance totalling £103 million. Of this, £87 million was in the form of special aid under Northern Ireland legislation. The other £16 million took the form of standard grants available either to industry generally in Northern Ireland, or to the United Kingdom shipbuilding industry as a whole.
