Mr. Allan Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he proposes to make any changes in the role and activities of the Scottish Information Office.

Mr. Younger

I have no plans to alter the role of SIO, but one consequence of the planned reduction in the size of the Scottish Office will be a reduction in the scale of activities of SIO.

Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much money the Scottish Information Office spent on general advertising in the last 12 months; what were the figures five and 10 years ago, respectively; if he will list the general subject of each advertisement; in which newspaper, or other part of the media, the advertisement appeared; and what was the cost of each individual advertisement.

Mr. Younger

During the current financial year, 1979–80, the total budget for advertising by the Scottish Information Office is £237,740 of which £180,662 has been spent. The information relating to the location and cost of advertisements in newspapers and other parts of the media is both complex and detailed and I am sending it to my hon. Friend. I am also placing a copy of the information in the Library of the House. Detailed information requested for five and 10 years ago cannot be provided except at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total cost of running the Scottish Information Office last year; what was the cost five and 10 years ago, respectively; and if he will specify the major constituent items in this total cost.

Mr. Younger

The total cost of the Scottish Information Office in 1978–79 was £777,000. The costs for five and 10 years ago could not be identified without disproportionate cost. The main constituent is salaries and staff related costs, the figures for which are £433,000 for 1978–9, £155,000 for 1973–74 and £90,000 for 1968–69 at the price levels obtaining in those years.

Mr. Allan Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the estimated total public expenditure cost of the Scottish Information Office for 1980–81.

Mr. Younger

The estimate will be laid before Parliament in due course.

Mr. Allan Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many staff were employed in the Scottish Information Office during 1977, 1978 and 1979 in (a) Scotland, and (b) London.

Mr. Younger

The staff employed in the Scottish Information Office at 1 April of each year were as follows:

1977 1978 1979
(a) Scotland 38 37 41
(b) London 3 3 3

Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many persons work in the Scottish Information Office at the latest available date; and how many worked there, respectively, one year, five years, and 10 years ago.

Mr. Younger

The numbers, which relate to the increase in responsibilities over the period of the Scottish Office, are as follows:

31 January 1980, 42; 1979, 44; 1975, 40; 1970, 28.

Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what films the Scottish Information Office has made in each of the last five years; what the subjects have been; and what the cost of each film has been.

Mr. Younger

Two films have been made for the Scottish Information Office during the last five years. A film on the work of the Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen, was made in the financial year 1975–76 at a cost of £18,600, and an oil-related film was made in the financial year 1976–77 at a cost of £1,590.

Mr. Allan Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much the Scottish Information Office spent on overseas publicity during 1977, 1978 and 1979.

Mr. Younger

In 1977, £7,396; in 1978, £7,032, and in 1979, £7,623.

Mr. Allan Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give a geographical breakdown by country of the visitors received by the Scottish Information Office during 1979.
