HC Deb 05 February 1980 vol 978 cc106-7W
Miss Richardson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why it was necessary for three of the crew of the Greek cargo ship which ran aground on Brighton beach on 22 January, who were Indian, to be put in prison.

Mr. Raison

Three Indian members of the crew of this ship were refused leave to enter on 21 January, after examination at Shoreham, because the immigration officer was not satisfied that they would leave the country if given leave to enter. Also, because the ship's officers were unable to supervise these crew members, they were detained for a period in Shoreham police station and subsequently in detention accommodation at Heathrow prior to their departure on 26 January. Two other Indian crew members were given leave to enter.
