HC Deb 05 February 1980 vol 978 c150W
42. Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current level of total aid from the public sector to fee-paying schools.

Dr. Boyson

In the financial year 1978–79 the total cost to public funds of agency services by direct grant and independent schools and establishments in England and Wales, and of assistance with the fees of children at such schools, was about £95 million at outturn prices. About half of this expenditure related to the education of handicapped children.
