‡Average earnings have been derived from the estimates of gross earnings of full time male manual workers aged 21 and over (Department of Employment October Enquiry) for 1960, and male manual employees aged 21 and over, whose earnings were unaffected by absence (New Earnings Survey) from 1970 using the Department of Employment's monthly indices of average earnings for interpolation and extrapolation. Income Tax at appropriate rates and National Insurance contributions at non-contracted out rates have been taken into account.
