HC Deb 05 February 1980 vol 978 c99W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what percentage of women and girls leaving Bull-wood Hall borstal in 1978 and 1979 had received no visits from relatives or friends during their sentence; what percentage had received only one such visit; and what percentage had received no visits from a probation officer or social worker.

Mr. Brittan

During 1978, 220 girls were discharged from Bullwood Hall. Of these29 per cent (64 girls) received no visits from family or friends during their stay at Bullwood; 20 per cent. (45 girls) had only one visit from family or friends; 50 per cent. (110 girls) received no visit from either a probation officer or a social worker during their stay at Bullwood.

During 1979 186 girls were discharged from Bullwood Hall. Of these: 23 per cent (42 girls) received no visit from family or friends during their stay at Bullwood; 20 per cent. (37 girls) had only one visit from family or friends; 29 per cent. (54 girls) received no visit from either a probation officer or a social worker during their stay at Bullwood.

It is not possible, without excessive cost, to identify how many of the girls discharged from Bullwood Hall during these two years also had additional visits from family, friends, probation officers or social workers while they were held at the remand centres nearest their homes awaiting transfer to Bullwood Hall.
