HC Deb 04 February 1980 vol 978 cc70-1W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many working days were lost in the National Health Service in 1979 due to industrial action; and what was the total number in the United Kingdom as a whole due to industrial action and the total number due to illness.

Sir George Young

The total number of working days lost in the National Health Service in 1979 due to industrial action is not yet known but should become available later this year. The total for 1978, 15,000, was given in my reply to the hon. Member on 30 October 1979—[Vol. 972, c.510.]

In the year up to June 1978 there were 419.4 million days of certified incapacity for work for the United Kingdom as a whole—this is the latest information available.

I understand that the estimated number of working days lost in industrial disputes in the United Kingdom in 1979 was 29.1 million. This figure is provisional and subject to revision later this year.
