HC Deb 04 February 1980 vol 978 c70W
Mr. Robert Atkins

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what further steps he is intending to take to curb the abuse of the National Health Service by tourists and other foreign nationals; and if he will make a statement;

  1. (2) what steps he is taking to implement his powers under section 121 of the National Health Services Act 1977 in connection with the collection of fees and charges from patients not ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom;
  2. (3) how many extra hospitals he estimates will be able to treat and charge tourists and other foreign nationals under proposed legislation, as opposed to those who may charge under the National Health Service Act 1977.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

These matters are under consideration, and I hope to make an announcement before long.
