HC Deb 04 February 1980 vol 978 cc47-8W
40. Mr. Dorrell

asked the Secretary of State for Trade whether he is satisfied that the degree of official communication with developing countries is adequate for the purpose of acquiring an appropriate British share of emerging markets.

Mr. Nott

Officials of my Department are in regular contact with representatives of developing countries, both directly and through our embassies overseas. In addition, Ministers pay regular visits to these countries. I am satisfied that these arrangements, backed up by the full range of our export services, provide adequate support to United Kingdom exporters.

43. Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what is the proportion of United Kingdom imports and exports, respectively, with developing countries.

Mr. Parkinson

In 1979, trade with the developing world—which includes oil exporting countries—accounted for 18 per cent. of United Kingdom imports and 22 per cent. of United Kingdom exports.

Separate figures for pick-ups are not available. The number and market share of imported cars and commercial vehicles in 1979 is far higher than in any of the three years 1965, 1970 or 1975.
