asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what latest estimate he has made of the cost of increasing child benefit from £4 to £5 a week in 1980–81.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish details of the rates of child benefit schemes operated in European Economic Community countries; and how they compare with the British scheme.

The rates of such allowances payable in each member State of the European Community at 1 January 1979 are set out in the "Comparative Social Security Tables for Member States of the European Communities" published by the Department. A copy is available in the Library of the House.
