asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will publish figures showing the expenditure on wages and salaries for the Civil Service, and on pensions, so far this year at the latest convenient date, and the same figures a year ago.

Mr. Channon

Between 1 April and 1 November 1980 expenditure on pay costs, including employers' national insurance contributions, was £2,650 million, and on pensions it was £395 million. The corresponding figures for the same period in 1979 were £2,080 million and £295 million.
