HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 c368W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of the salaries of nonacademic staff in England and Wales is met from public funds through the University Grants Committee or in some other way; what the amount was; and what the increase or decrease was, expressed as a percentage, over last year's figure.

Dr. Boyson

The proportion of salaries of non-academic staff in England and Wales supported from public funds in the latest years for which figures are available, ie academic year 1978–79, is estimated at about 90 per cent. or £200 million at out-turn prices. This is approximately the same proportion as in the previous academic year, 1977–78.
