HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 cc330-1W
Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will state as a percentage of gross national product the defence spending of each North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nation in 1978–79, 1979–80, 1980–81 and the estimate for 1981–82.

Mr. Hayhoe

The information requested is set out below. The NATO definition of defence expenditure, which is broader than the United Kingdom Defence budget, has been used throughout. Gross domestic product at market prices has been used as the aggregate of national income. Percentages are shown on a calendar year basis. No estimates beyond 1980 are available. No figures are available for Greece. Iceland has no defence expenditure.
