HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 c348W
Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what agreements were reached on his visit to Chile last August.

Mr. Parkinson

None.

Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Trade, in the light of the United Nations special rapporteur's finding that, in spite of the promotion of non-traditional exports, the economic situation of the mass of the Chilean people has continued to deteriorate, what actions Her Majesty's Government will be taking to curtail the import of Chilean foodstuffs to the United Kingdom and thus promote the nutrition of the poorer sectors of the Chilean population.

Mr. Parkinson

Subject to our international obligations, the Government's policy is that civil trade should be based on commercial considerations and not on the domestic policies of our trade partners.
