HC Deb 18 December 1980 vol 996 cc315-6W
Mr. Michael Spicer

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average private sector rent paid in each region of Scotland; and what is the average amount paid in domestic rates per household in each region of Scotland.

Mr. Rifkind

The information requested in the first half of the question is not available. The only reliable information available centrally on average private sector rent levels in Scotland is in relation to registered rents, which may be higher than actual rent payments. Table A below contains, for the areas indicated, averages of all annual rents registered by the rent officers concerned during the quarter ended 30 June 1980 in respect of (a) unfurnished private lettings and housing association lettings together, and (b) furnished lettings.

Table B shows average annual domestic rate payment demands for 1980–81 by regional and island council areas together with comparable figures for the private sector only.
