HC Deb 18 December 1980 vol 996 cc257-8W
24. Mr. Hal Miller

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the number of people using CB radio; and how he arrives at that estimate.

Mr. Raison

Estimates of the extent of any illegal actions such as this are obviously liable to be imprecise, but information supplied by the Post Office in the light of its monitoring and investigative activities on our behalf suggests that in mid-November the number of illicit users of 27 MHz CB radio was of the order of 40,000.

37. Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received on the subject of open channel radio, citizens band.

Mr. Raison

We have now received representations from over 12,000 individuals or organisations—including separate signatories on petitions—in response to the discussion document which we published on open channel radio.

Most of the individuals who have responded are in favour of a 27 MHz service, but industrial, broadcasting and aviation interests are unanimously opposed to it.
