HC Deb 18 December 1980 vol 996 c301W
Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish figures showing expenditure on wages and salaries and pensions for the National Health Service at the latest convenient date, and at the same time a year ago.

Sir George Young

The latest period for which reliable expenditure figures are available for salaries, wages and pensions in the National Health Service is the financial year ended 31 March 1980. Salaries and wages paid in this period and in the 12 months ended 31 March 1979 amounted to £4,259 million and £3,495 million respectively. The figures include employers' national insurance and superannuation contributions. Pensions paid in the same periods totalled £299 million respectively. The figures relate to England and Wales.
