HC Deb 18 December 1980 vol 996 c255W
Mr. Haselhurst

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what estimate he has of the number of people who live within journey-to-work travel time of Gatwick airport of (a) 45 minutes and (b) 30 minutes.

Mr. Tebbit

On the basis of the mid-1978 population estimates and of the studies of 1978 travel times prepared for the British Airports Authority, it is estimated that approximately 2.5 million people live within 45 minutes, and 800,000 within 30 minute travel time of Gatwick airport. These figures encompass rail travel with the exception of the densely populated areas around Victoria station and Clapham Junction, parts of which may just be within 45 minutes travel time from Gatwick airport.
