19. Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is his estimate of the rise in unemployment in the United Kingdom since May 1979.

Mr. Prior

Between May 1979 and November 1980 the increase in the numbers registered as unemployed in the United Kingdom, seasonally adjusted and excluding school leavers, was 722,100.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the current level of unemployment.

Mr. Jim Lester

At 13 November 1980 the number of people registered as unemployed in the United Kingdom was 2,162,874 compared with 1,355,203 at 8 November 1979.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people were in employment in each year since 1945, subdivided between men and women, part-timers and full-timers.

Mr. Jim Lester

Comprehensive estimates of the numbers of all male and female employees in employment are available from mid-1948 to 1980 and of full-time and part-time employees from mid-1971 to 1977. The following table gives the available information for Great Britain.

1. Estimates from 1948 to 1959(a) are based on mid-year counts of national insurance cards.

2. Figures from 1971 to 1977 are from censuses of employment. Those from 1959(b) to 1970, taken from the continuous series of employment estimates, are comparable with the census figures and take account of discontinuities present in earlier data.

3. Figures for 1978, 1979 and 1980 are from the quarterly series of provisional employment estimates which does not distinguish full-time from part-time employees.
