HC Deb 09 December 1980 vol 995 cc324-5W
14. Miss Joan Lestor

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what studies have been made by his Department of the increased number of school leavers to enter the labour market in the first half of the 1980s as a result of the increase in the number of births in the 1960s.

Mr. Jim Lester

The Government have estimates of the numbers of school leavers entering the labour market in successive academic years. The number is expected to peak at 715,000 in the current academic year and to decline thereafter. My Department has sponsored a number of research projects into the experience of school leavers entering the labour market.

17. Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many special schemes for school leavers will be implemented in the Crewe travel-to-work area in the year 1980–81.

Mr. Jim Lester

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that in the Crewe and Nantwich local authority district, which roughly approximates to the Crewe travel-to-work area, there were 600 places on approved schemes at the end of October 1980. Some 420 young people had already entered YOP by that date. The commission will keep the stock of places under review to ensure that no young person in the groups covered by the undertaking will be left without the offer of a place on the programme.
