HC Deb 09 December 1980 vol 995 c350W
Mr. Heddle

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he is satisfied with the workings of sections 55 and 57 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1971, and in particular with the number of prosecutions brought against those responsible for the deliberate demolition of listed buildings.

Mr. Monro

I am satisfied that sections 55 and 57 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1971 provide suitable statutory protection for listed buildings. Proceedings can be initiated by individuals and amenity societies as well as by local authorities.

I understand that the Home Office does not maintain separate figures for prosecutions under these provisions.
