Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what percentage of (a) all births and (b) births in National Health Service hospitals were induced in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and the first half of 1980, respectively; and what were the perinatal mortality rates for these births.

In 1978, the latest year for which figures are available, the estimated number of inductions as a percentage of all deliveries in hospitals in England and Wales was 36.3 per cent. The comparable figures for hospital inductions as a percentage of all births was 33.4 per cent. The perinatal mortality rate for these births is not readily available. Information for 1976 and 1977 was given in my reply to the hon. Member on 3 June.—[Vol. 985, c.623.]
